Timor-Leste Ambassador Highlights Strong Bilateral Ties with Cambodia

PHNOM PENH – Ambassador Ermenegildo Kupa Lopes from the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste recently expressed deep appreciation to the Cambodian National Assembly and government for their unwavering support in his nation's development. This includes Cambodia's endorsement of Timor-Leste's membership in ASEAN and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). Furthermore, Cambodia's commitment is exemplified through annual scholarships granted to Timorese students for studies in Cambodia.

In a credential presentation meeting with National Assembly President Khuon Sudary, Ambassador Lopes emphasized the robust ties between the two countries, fortified by reciprocal high-level visits. He fondly recalled the 2016 visit of Hun Sen, former Prime Minister of Cambodia, to Timor-Leste, lauding it as a testament to the brotherly bond shared between the nations.

Ambassador Lopes also commended the successful conduct of the Cambodian elections, noting the processes as free, fair, and just. He extended congratulations to Khuon Sudary for being elected as President of the National Assembly for its seventh term.

Welcoming Ambassador Lopes and associates, Khuon Sudary recognized the Ambassador’s significant role in bolstering the bilateral relationship and cooperation between Cambodia and Timor-Leste, a bond that has been growing since 2002.

Khuon Sudary acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Cambodian and Timorese legislatures in international forums like AIPA, IPU, and APPF, yet highlighted the absence of a formal bilateral agreement.

To enhance and broaden inter-parliamentary cooperation, Ambassador Lopes, on behalf of Timor-Leste, extended an invitation to Khuon Sudary for a visit to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste at a convenient time.

Khuon Sudary expressed support for strengthening the partnership between the two legislatures. As a leading female figure in the National Assembly, she looked forward to the prospect of direct engagement with the President of the Timorese Senate in the near future, fostering stronger bilateral relations.
